Who Was Guan Yu? The Legendary Symbol of Loyalty for Over 2,000 Years

In Chinese history, the era of Three Kingdoms was not only a time of war and chaos, but also a period that gave rise to extraordinary heroes. Among them, Guan Yu stands above the rest — not just because of his strength, but because of something far rarer: absolute loyalty.

Today, his image goes beyond history. He has become a cultural icon, even worshipped as a deity in many parts of Asia.

1. Guan Yu’s Origins – From an Ordinary Man to a Legend

Guan Yu (courtesy name Yunchang) was born into a humble background. He had no noble lineage, no powerful connections — only two defining qualities:

  • Exceptional martial skills

  • A strong and dignified character

The turning point of his life came when he met Liu Bei and Zhang Fei.

Together, they performed the famous Oath of the Peach Garden, swearing:

“Though not born on the same day, we wish to die on the same day.”

👉 This oath laid the foundation for one of the most legendary brotherhoods in history.

2. Guan Yu’s Legendary Battles

Guan Yu is widely regarded as one of the most powerful generals of the Three Kingdoms period.

He is famously associated with:

  • The Green Dragon Crescent Blade

  • The Red Hare horse

  • An imposing presence that struck fear into enemies

The Feat: “Crossing Five Passes and Slaying Six Generals”

This is one of the most iconic stories about him.

While temporarily serving Cao Cao, Guan Yu remained loyal to Liu Bei. Upon learning that Liu Bei was still alive, he immediately set out to reunite with him.

However, the journey was dangerous:

  • Blocked at multiple checkpoints

  • Constantly pursued

  • Forced to fight powerful generals

The result:

👉 He defeated six generals and passed through five gates to return.

⚡ This moment perfectly highlights:

  • Loyalty

  • Individual strength

  • An unyielding spirit

3. Relationship with Cao Cao – Respect Between Rivals

One of the most fascinating aspects of Guan Yu’s story is his relationship with Cao Cao.

Despite being on opposing sides, Cao Cao deeply admired him:

  • Rewarded him generously

  • Gifted him the Red Hare horse

  • Treated him as an honored guest

And yet—

👉 Guan Yu still chose to leave.

No betrayal. No hesitation.

This unwavering integrity is what sets him apart from many historical figures.

4. The Peak of His Career and a Fatal Mistake

After reuniting with Liu Bei, Guan Yu continued to achieve great military success.

His peak came when he was assigned to guard Jing Province — a highly strategic location.

However, this is where tragedy began.

Critical Mistakes: Overconfidence

  • Underestimating his enemies

  • Losing coordination with allies

  • Becoming isolated

As a result, he was ultimately defeated by the forces of Sun Quan.

5. The Death of Guan Yu – Tragic Yet Immortal

After being captured, Guan Yu was offered a chance to surrender.

He had the opportunity to live.

He had the chance to retain power.

But he chose:

👉 Refusal.

In the end, he was executed.

Yet, it was this very death that transformed him from a general into an immortal legend.

6. Why Is Guan Yu Worshipped as a God?

After his death, Guan Yu was not forgotten.

Instead, he was deified as “Lord Guan” (Guan Gong).

His image represents:

  • Loyalty

  • Righteousness

  • Protection for merchants and businesses

He became widely known through the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which helped spread his legacy across Asia.
